Adobe Reader 更新至 8.1.3

Adobe 已于本月初将 PDF 阅读工具 Adobe Reader 的 Unix 平台版本更新至 8.1.3。新版本针对危险的安全性漏洞及用户报告的缺陷进行了修正。目前，适用于 Unix 平台的 Adobe Reader 9 依然没有消息。

Adobe Reader 的 Unix 平台版本适用于 Linux 和 Sparc Solaris，包含 deb、rpm、tar 等格式的安装包。你可以从 Adobe 的 FTP 站点下载 Adobe Reader 8.1.3，并选择适用于自己系统的语言。

Setting Up ProFTPd + TLS On Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex)

FTP is a very insecure protocol because all passwords and all data are transferred in clear text. By using TLS, the whole communication can be encrypted, thus making FTP much more secure. This article explains how to set up ProFTPd with TLS on an Ubuntu 8.10 server.

How to Fix Usplash in Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid)

At the moment if you change your usplash theme, it just does not change.To fix this use the following procedure.

sudo apt-get install libusplash-dev

Then go to your theme folder (In this example we are using this and the filenames used below is for this one )

make

sudo cp usplash-theme-wideubuntu.so /usr/lib/usplash

sudo rm /etc/alternatives/usplash-artwork.so

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/usplash/usplash-theme-wideubuntu.so /etc/alternatives/usplash-artwork.so

sudo update-initramfs -u

sudo update-grub

That's it now you should be having your new usplash.

说到开源、跨平台的思维导图软件，大家可能首先会想到 FreeMind。今天，我将向大家介绍另一款同样开源且跨平台的思维导图软件，这就是 XMind。就我的试用来看，XMind 在功能上一点也不逊色于 FreeMind，某些方面，XMind 甚至更加具有优势。

XMind 的特点是具有多种结构样式，不只 Map 一种，还包括 Org、Tree、Logic Chart、Fishbone 等等。同时，在 XMind 中，除了可以灵活的定制节点外观、插入图标外，还有多种样式和主题可以选择。

在格式支持方面，你可以导入 FreeMind、MindManager 等软件的文件格式，当然也包括 XMind 自身的格式；输出则支持文本、图像、HTML 等。

强调分享是 XMind 的另一个特色。XMind.net 网站本身便是一个分享思维导图的平台。在 XMind 中，你可以直接将想要分享的思维导图上传。

XMind 包括独立版本和适用于 Eclipse 的插件版本，可以运行于 Linux（包括 64 位）、Mac OS X 及 Windows 平台。

remind: a text based agenda and todolist manager

There are lots of different tools for managing your time: Mozilla has a standalone solution: Sunbird and another one based on Thunderbird: Lighting, KDE has Korganizer, and Gnome has the young gnome-agenda and the very popular Evolution, and we must not forget the most famous web based tool: Google Calendar.

All these applications are based on a graphical user interface, and use either iCalendar or the older vCalendar as the data formats.

What about people who prefer console based interfaces and want to edit the data with their favourite text editors? The best solution is remind: it uses an easy but powerful language for describing events. A simple example, this event happens every Tuesday at 13:00 and lasts one hour:
```
REM Tue AT 13:00 DURATION 1:00 MSG Group meeting
```
You always forget your appointments? Remind can help you:
```
REM Tue +1 AT 13:00 +120 *5 DURATION 1:00 MSG Group meeting
```
It will begin to bother you one day before the date, and will display warnings two hours before, every five minutes. The language is really powerful, and is able to express arbitrary complex date calculations (first Monday of a month, excluding holidays, moon phases). To look at the events of the day, simply run:
```
$ remind
Reminders for Thursday, 10th July, 2008 (today):

Write Debaday post today at 3:00pm
```
Remind can import and export iCalendar files, and generate HTML and Postscript from your calendar. You can choose to have reminders sent by email, or showed by a pop-up window but you’ll need to start remind with some special arguments for that, see the Remind FAQ at the 43folders wiki which has a lot of useful tips for remind.

You can also use it through user-friendly interfaces: tkremind, a Tk based front-end, but it hides some of the power from remind; and wyrd, a curses based interface which eases the editing of events and lets you use all of the power of remind.

Availability
Remind has been available in Debian since Sarge (perhaps even longer), and in Ubuntu since Dapper.

NaughtySVN: 易用的 Subversion 客户端

NaughtySVN（以下简称“NSVN”）是一个易用的 Subversion 客户端程序。NSVN 具有图形用户界面，并作为 Nautilus（GNOME 桌面环境默认的文件管理器）的扩展使用。通过 NSVN，用户一方面可以管理 Subversion 文件库，另一方面也能够执行检出、提交、以及处理工作副本等操作。

NSVN 仍旧处于活跃的开发之中，目前已经实现的功能包括：
1. 与 Nautilus 集成。
2. 显示及隐藏上下文菜单条目。
3. 创建 Subversion 文件库。
4. 从 Subverion 文件库检出工作副本。
5. 添加文件/目录到工作副本。
6. 将工作副本提交到 Subversion 文件库。

Xfce 4.6 Beta 2 (Hopper) 发布

轻量级桌面环境 Xfce 于今日发布了 4.6 的第二个 Beta 测试版本。Beta 2 代号为”Hopper“，主要修正了上一版中的 bug，但也添加了一些细微的新特性。
- xfwm4 的键盘快捷键能够重新配置，并包含冲突处理。
- 改进了会话管理功能，如果应用程序意外终止，能够自动重启。
- 可通过 Thunar 右键菜单来设置桌面壁纸。

Linux 下的显卡硬解码混战

Windows 下有 DXVA，符合规范的解码器能够利用显卡的运算能力进行视频的部分甚至全部解码工作。现在 ATI 的 UVD2 和 NVIDIA 的 PureVideoHD 已经趋于成熟了。Intel 的 ClearVideo 也在进步中。总之使用 Windows 的用户可以尽情享受新型显卡带来的好处。但是 Linux 下的用户就惨了，Linux 下最常用的视频输出就是 xv，能够提供快速的显示，但是对于 UVD2 和 PureVideoHD 的新特性是没有对应的使用方法的。有能力使用显卡进行部分解码的东东是 XvMC。问题是这个东东设计的时候只考虑了 Mpeg2 的完全硬解码。对于 H264，VC1 没有部分对应的解码方法，因此无法对 H264 和 VC1 进行完全硬解码。使用起来也不方便。估计很多的 mplayer 使用者没有指定过 -vo xvmc -vc ffmpeg12mc 来看 mpeg 吧。针对这种情况，多种的解决方案也相应提出来，可是还没有哪个已经成气候。结果就是…现在的 Linux 的显卡硬解码方案是群雄混战……

因为内容都是提供 Linux 下的显卡解码 API，所以下面仅给出链接。
- Intel：
  提出了 VA-API。可是社区讨论认为基本是重复了 DXVA 的那一套，所以……社区又提出要扩展 XvMC 以支持更多格式…这个大家去找邮件列表看吧，我不太了解。
- ATI：
  新的 Linux 驱动中出现了几个使用意图未明的库文件，经过符号分析，发现了 UVD 字样和 XvBA 字样。详情看链接。UVD 很清楚了，但是 XvBA 是什么呢？X-Video Bitstream Acceleration (XvBA) 就是 AMD 扩展 Xv 令其能够执行 Bitstream 解码，而这个是现在的高清格式解码中很重要的一部分。原来的 GPU 对于整数运算和位运算基本没有能力，所以早期的显卡很难完成高清格式的完全解码。新的 ATI 和 NVIDIA 显卡都针对这种情况内置了相应的硬件。这才能使显卡完全解码成为可能。但是 AMD 没有发布相关的说明，驱动也没有相应的头文件，无法调用。因此现阶段只是推测。但是既然库文件中有了这个符号，应该不会有错吧。
- Generic GPU-Accelerated Video Decoding：
  一个 Google code 项目，也可见于 [www.bitblit.org]。一般性的显卡视频解码加速，部分使用了 OpenGL shader 来解码，目前发展当中。似乎是没有特定的硬件要求，说明是只要基于 Gallium3D 的驱动框架就能解码 (Mesa3D 就是用这个的)。目前已经用他自己 API 实现了 XvMC，这样就提供了兼容性和过渡性方案。
- 今天又有新发现 NVIDIA Driver Brings PureVideo Features To Linux：
  NVIDIA 的 8 系列显卡的 Linux 驱动将不再支持 Xvmc，这个激起了相当大的民愤。可是没有想到!!NVIDIA 发出了 180.06 Linux 驱动，有了个视频解码 API!! VDPAU API (The Video Decode and Presentation API for Unix)，这个不光有解码，还有解码后处理，如降噪等功能!!更绝的是驱动连同头文件和文档都发布了，更有 NVIDIA 为 mplayer 写的开启相关功能的补丁在网站上可供下载!!之后就是这个页面太厉害了，刚发布就有了 Benchmarks。结果是使用打过补丁的 mplayer 用 -vo vdpau -vc ffh264vdpau 参数来播放高清 H264，结果是降频到 1.8G 的 CPU 占用率基本为 10%，完全可以证明其硬件加速的能力!
这些消息说明了厂商对 Linux 开发的逐渐重视。但是现在确实是一场大混战…Linux 界尤为明显的一个规律就是优胜劣汰。好东东写出来 N 年后也有人用，糟糕的昙花一现…不知这场大战最终会是个什么结果…但是对于 Linux 用户来说，体验是大大增强了。

Awesome 3.1 RC 2 发布

在上周末，Awesome 的开发者给我们带来了 3.1 的首个候选发布版本。时隔一周，Awesome 3.1 的第二个候选版现在也发布了。如此看来，Awesome 开发小组推出 3.1 正式版是指日可待了。

据 Awesome 开发者 Julien Danjou 在邮件列表中的介绍，Awesome 3.1 RC 2 没有大的方面的改动，毕竟在 RC 1 时许多重要特性就已定型了。即便如此，除了进行一些细微的改进和修订之外，Awesome 3.1 RC 2 仍然有以下方面值得注意：
- 重制了默认主题，并加入了新的“sky”主题
- 合并了”revelation“模块，提供类似 Exposé 的特性
- 更新了 awful.menu，能够兼容更多对象
你可以参考 Awesome 3.1 RC 2 的更新记录以了解详细的变化。其源代码在 Awesome 官方网站能够找到。
